Interview with Marlon Hylton

When you think of intrapreneurship, lawyers probably aren’t the first people to pop into your mind. But to say that lawyers can’t be innovative and intrapreneurs would be wrong. Recently, we sat down with Marlon Hylton of the Toronto law firm Cassels Brock to learn just how he became an intrapreneur in this field.

Like other industries, the law profession is quickly changing. Marlon believes that most of these changes are in part due to the advancement in technology, which is allowing new players that may not even practice law to enter the game. However, he also knows that law firms have an advantage over these outside players, as they are better versed in the ins and outs of practicing law. Marlon predicts that the lawyers and law firms that hold high regard for innovation as a core value and use it in their practice will be the ones who will not just survive but flourish in the future.

Marlon provides some great advice on how any intrapreneur can sell innovative their ideas to their organizations; do it in bite-sized pieces. Rather than taking large ideas that may be hard to both understand and implement all at once, if you can show how each piece of the whole adds value, Marlon believes that people will find it easier to buy in to. Start small, and use these small successes to grow and innovate more and more.
