What is a Tablet PC?
A tablet PC is the evolution of a notebook computer. It's a lightweight notebook with a built-in digitizer that utilizes a stylus pen to operate the computer. Tablet PCs run on a specialized version of Windows operating systems (tablet PC editions) and still run all Windows-based software. Specifications are similar to other notebooks although they are typically smaller (10" or 12" screens), lighter (3 pounds or less) and may not have built-in CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives. In addition, special attention is paid to battery life, and all tablet PCs have built in wireless capabilities (known as 802.11x).
Tablet PCs come in two different styles: slates and convertibles.

A slate style tablet PC
Slate style tablet PCs are essentially a screen only device with no attached keyboard. Slate tablet PCs don't have a physical keyboard but instead have an on-screen, interactive keyboard component that is accessed with the stylus pen.

A convertible style tablet PC
The convertible tablet PC is similar to the traditional notebook laptop however, the screen pivots 180 degrees and can snap down on top of the keyboard. A convertible tablet PC allows you to use the keyboard, the stylus pen or both - making it a very versatile choice.
Although you may use a mouse or touchpad to navigate a tablet PC, all tablet PCs are equipped with a stylus pen to operate its software, makes it possible to stay completely mobile while using the computer.
Both styles are also available as tougher, more rugged models (usually built to tough military standards) which are able to withstand drops on concrete and may be protected from dust, dirt and the elements. However, this external strength will normally translate into a heavier tablet PC.
The tablet PC operating system gives you:
- Versatility in controlling the tablet PC with a digital pen, mouse or keyboard
- Interaction with your Windows-based tablet PC programs via the stylus pen
- Input information with pen-driven input and "electronic ink"
- Handwriting recognition is the answer to the question "How do I record non-standard information that can't be selected from a drop-down list or drawn?"
- Ability to handwrite documents on the tablet PC
- Store, search and review handwritten notes
- Ability to convert handwritten notes into text
- Enhanced annotation functionality with electronic ink
- Rotational capabilities with the screen - in portrait or landscape mode

There are two important points to remember:
- The screen of most tablet PCs is not touch-sensitive (it only responds to the stylus pen), so you can rest your hand naturally on it while using it.
- The tablet PC operating system will recognize most handwriting and it is surprisingly accurate.

Slate style tablets are best suited for use in the field because of their slim, lightweight design. A slate tablet PC is ideal if your tablet will primarily be used for drawing diagrams, building estimates on-site or if daylight readability is a necessity. Because of its lightweight (under 3 lbs.) dimensions, carrying a slate will not incur arm fatigue. Additional peripherals may be used with your slate tablet, such as a keyboard or mouse, so that a it may be used as the sole computer for your work station.
Convertible style tablets are ideal for use as a full time regular computer (email, internet browsing, MS Office applications) and a part time on-site claims estimating tool. A built-in keyboard and CD/DVD drive ensure there is virtually no difference between a convertible and a lightweight laptop). A convertible tablet PC with a small (10" to 12") display is recommended as those with larger (14" or 15") displays are substantially heavier.
Rugged tablets are the clear choice if a damage resistant, water resistant and dirt repelling tablet PC is needed. Most rugged tablets are slate style tablets and are more expensive than other tablet PC styles.
